Sex with or without a condom? The answer is certainly obvious for many people – or so you would think. After all, condoms not only protect against unwanted pregnancy, but also against sexually transmitted diseases. But what does the reality look like? Do most people actually pay attention to condom use during sex? A new survey of the erotic community Joyclub provides information.
Over two-thirds use condoms at least outside the partnership
“Sex doesn’t feel as intense”, “It’s annoying to think about putting a condom on before sex” or “There’s just no suitable size for my penis” – the list of excuses for not using a condom during sex is long. But how many condom refusers are there really? The erotic community Joyclub took a closer look at the topic of “condom use” in a survey of 2,000 of its 3.5 million members.
Result: Every fifth (20.7 percent) of the men and women surveyed stated that they always use a condom during sex. A further 69.7 percent only use condoms outside of a partnership, for example for one-night stands or flings. And just 10 percent do not use condoms at all.
When buying a condom, the size is the most important factor
The behavior when buying condoms has also been recorded in the Joyclub survey. Interesting: On the question whether man or woman is responsible for the purchase of the rubber covers, there is a large discrepancy between the sexes in the answers.
An incredible 94.7 percent of male survey participants, for example, say that buying condoms is their responsibility. But is that really true? If you look at the percentage of female respondents, it is rather doubtful. Of these, only 76.5 percent say that the man provides the condoms. For 33.5 percent of the female respondents, it is clear that women are responsible for buying condoms.
It is quite possible that the perhaps somewhat cocky response of the men is related to the most important purchase criterion. Because when asked what they look for most when buying a condom, the size was by far the most frequently mentioned. That is to that extent a somewhat surprising answer that approximately half of the male asked admits not to know the exact condom size at all. Only 11.4 percent have ever taken out the tape measure and measured it.
The second most frequent answer to the question about the most important purchase criteria is the desire for a condom that is as thin as possible and has the most sensation – also not really surprising. After all, condoms are used by many only for their intended purpose, but are perceived as a pleasure killer. Thus 71 percent of the men and 54.5 percent of the women indicate that sex feels less intensive with condom.
In addition, many condom buyers make sure to reach for the product of a trustworthy brand – the third most common answer.
Condom ruptured – almost half have already experienced it
As for the purchase, the man is also responsible for putting on the condom. At least that’s the opinion of 87.2 percent of male and female respondents. Thus, for just 12.8 percent, the woman ensures that the condom is pulled over the penis.
Condom burst survey
And what about the well-known mishap – the condom breaks? Almost half (47.3 percent) of respondents have experienced it. So it’s important to check the size of the condom, the best-before date and – most importantly – that the fingernails are not too long. After all, safe sex should always come first.
