Besides birth control pills and condoms, another contraceptive method is gaining popularity: male sterilization. The erotic community Joyclub wanted to know more and asked its own members about the topic “vasectomy”.

Only a quarter of the men excludes sterilization
Just because family planning is complete does not mean that sexual intercourse is no longer taking place. Couples therefore ask themselves at the appropriate time: How do we use contraception? Do we use a condom or the pill?

There is another contraceptive method that has recently become increasingly popular among couples: Male sterilization (vasectomy). What exactly people think about vasectomy has now been investigated by the erotic community Joyclub in a survey of 2,000 of its total of 3.5 million members.

Result: More than three quarters of the asked men can imagine a sterilization quite (47.3 per cent), will let the intervention make in due time definitely (8.8 per cent) or are already sterilized (20.2 per cent). Only for a quarter of the men a vasectomy is out of the question.

Since it is presumably men of older age who are more likely to want to refrain from having children, the answers given by different age groups were examined. It was found that the number of men over the age of 45 who had already been sterilized was actually significantly higher than that of younger men, at around one-third.

And what do women think? 92.9 percent of the female respondents would like men not to declare contraception a purely female matter, but to take on more responsibility themselves. The fact that sterilization is an issue for more and more men thus seems to be entirely in line with what the ladies want.

Main reason for vasectomy are completed child plans

The assumption that completed child plans are the main reason for a vasectomy is also confirmed by the Joyclub survey.

The second most frequently cited reason is more interesting: men are afraid of hormonal interference with the contraceptive pill and would therefore like to relieve the woman of this burden. In this case, sterilization serves as a substitute for another contraceptive method.

The same applies to the third most frequently cited motivation. Thus, 33.9 percent of men say that they hope to be able to do without condoms in the future as a result of sterilization.

Less desire through sterilization? Men report the opposite

Sterilization as a contraceptive method may have its appeal and be an option for many men, yet there are also certain fears. After all, the extent of a vasectomy is much more serious than swallowing a pill or unrolling a small bag of latex. A vasectomy means surgery with a scalpel.

Moreover, the decision to be sterilized is final. Men make a commitment for the rest of their lives that they do not want to have any more children. Although there are now ways to reverse a vasectomy, this option is not common.

Of the male survey participants, a full 43.7 percent say that they are primarily afraid of complications during surgery when they think about sterilization.

But it’s not just possible surgical risks that make men think twice when it comes to the topic of “sterilization” – the loss of sexual power is also a concern. More than a third are worried about losing the ability to have an erection, no longer being able to ejaculate or losing their libido.

However, the answers given by sterilized men make it clear that these fears are largely unfounded. A full 96.2 percent of those who have already had a vasectomy say that they do not regret their decision at all. Just 2.5 percent report complications with the operation. And no more than 1.3 percent have since decided to have the sterilization reversed.

And a loss of libido after sterilization? 92.9 percent of the men surveyed even report the exact opposite – they now have more desire for sex than before. Only 7.1 percent state that sexual desire has decreased after the procedure.
